Meet our Head of Hospitality, Martin Burns
July 23, 2017
Once a month we profile someone from our team and introduce them to you so that you can get to know us better. This month, it is our head of hospitality’s turn, Martin Burns.
What was your first job?
I was working in Mathiesons Bakery in Falkirk, making bread rolls every day.
What are the highlights of your career so far?
It’s really hard to say as there have been so many. But working at the Chanel Fashion Event at Linlithgow Palace, doing the Military Tattoo, and meeting people you think you would never think likely – Sean Fitzpatrick and Kevin Bridges for example – are definitely highlights.
What do you love about your job?
There are many things I love about my job but my favourite bit is seeing people leave happy and knowing you have just run a successful event. Nothing beats that feeling!
What is your best tip for those who want to have a career in events?
Many people think that working in events is glamorous – and to a certain degree it is – but it is very hard work. You need to be prepared to work long and hard. It’s definitely not a typical 9-5 Monday to Friday type of career.
What are your tips for a successful event?
Preparation is definitely key! It’s important to talk through every aspect of the event with your team. And when you meet the clients on the day, make sure you talk through the event with them again. Just to make sure you’re all on the same page. Also, be prepared for change; sometimes things don’t go according to plan and you need to make sure you can deal with unexpected changes. Expect the unexpected.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Don’t panic! The more you panic, the more time you lose!
What’s your favourite place in Edinburgh?
Generally speaking, any specialist gin bar will be my favourite; though now I am working with the team at The Hub, it could be here!
What is your most treasured possession?
When I was 16 I was given a gold chain by my parents and it’s definitely my most treasured possession. I’ve only taken it off about three times since I was given it, and that was when I was in hospital for surgery.
Who would you like to meet?
I’d love to meet Billy Connolly! I grew up watching his videos and programmes and I think he has a unique and honest perspective on life.
What is your favourite treat from the Cafe Hub?
