As home of the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) whose call out this year was #welcomeworld, we thought we should introduce our café team that helped us through the summer. Not only does our team welcome the world in August – and throughout the rest of the year of course – but they are from all over the world themselves!
With faces old (meet David Nisbet, who has been with us for 17 years this month!) and new (with many of our team in Edinburgh to study), we really were spoilt by an interesting array of ages and nationalities in our Cafe Hub team this summer. Of those studying, courses ranged from: Engineering, Finance, Film Studies, Geology, Medicine, Chemistry, Green Technology, Physiotherapy, International Law, IT and teaching. And, with over 50 waiters and stewards, we had staff from countries such as: Spain, Poland, Russia, Mexico, China, South Africa, New Zealand, Bulgaria, Hungary, Columbia, Italy, Australia, France, Slovakia, Germany and the UK – we also had some locals from our hometown Edinburgh!
We asked our team some questions and here are some of the responses:
What was your first job?
There were a big variety of responses, but most of them had been involved in customer facing roles, whether it’s making coffee or pulling a pint.
What are your summer highlights so far?
All that sunshine for weeks and weeks – Edinburgh is so fantastic on a sunny day, especially on the terrace watching the world go by. We have an excuse to be on the terrace out in the sun, and it’s definitely better than a boring office!
What do you love about your job?
The huge variety of people you get to meet, from all over the world. Oh and we LOVED the Gin tasting from Edinburgh Gin who were our sponsors this year.
What is your best tip for those who want to enter your field?
Who was the most amazing member of the team?
We never pick favourites, but one of our gang spoke five languages, and we found that pretty amazing!
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Learn from your mistakes and DON’T PANIC
Who came to the Hub this year?
For those old enough to remember, we had the old cast of Blue Peter here to see our show Midsummer – what a throwback!
Most popular item from Cafe Hub?
We had a range of Mezze Salads that were incredibly popular with our visitors – the sunshine definitely helped. And, as gin is definitely the drink of the moment, we sold LOTS of that!
