“Just a few easy steps downhill from the Castle, the Hub is another of Edinburgh's landmark buildings and a prime destination for coffees and light meals when the sightseeing gets too much. The bright cadmium yellow walls of the ground floor café come as something of a shock after the austere Victorian exterior, but lend the place an informal, welcoming feel that's reflected in the relaxed, affable service. However, the concise, seasonal menu leaves no doubt that this place is serious about its food. A full-flavoured Toulouse sausage and red lentil soup hits the spot with its peppery warmth, while a satisfying grilled polenta slice, chosen from an appetising selection of 'quick bites', is lifted by the sweetness of onion jam and roasted peppers. More substantial main dishes are excellent value, such as well-seasoned fillets of pan-seared sea bream teamed with a delicious combination of garlicky green beans and lightly curried new potatoes. The carefully presented sweets are equally good, especially a vanilla-rich crème brûlée with a base of crushed pistachio nuts and accompanying home-made biscuits."
